Christian and British Values
Christ Church is a Church of England school and our Christian values are reflected in everything we do and influence how we treat each other. Believing CHRIST to be in all of us, each half term we focus on a particular value through our worship and curriculum to help children explore what each value represents.
British Values
In 2014, Department for Education stated that there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” At Christ Church, we promote British values, linked seamlessly alongside our Christian Values and how they mirror our living faith. Our children know and understand that Jesus promoted the values and importance of a democratic society, the importance of rules and law, individual liberty, the importance of respecting each other and being tolerant of people who hold different faiths and beliefs. Below are some of the ways in which we encourage this.
Democracy
Democracy is embedded at the school. Children are always listened to by adults and through our value of Community, they are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. Some of the ways democracy is promoted are as follows:
- Elected Pupil Voice Groups - Ethos Group, House Captains, Eco Council
- Pupil Voice - questionnaires, surveys
- History curriculum - Ancient Greek civilisation, Victorian political reforms, World Wars
- Debating opportunities - working with other local schools
- Picture News - as part of our SMSC curriculum
Rule of Law
The importance of laws, whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced through our value of Integrity. Our motto of 'Ready, Respectful, Safe' is deeply embedded in our work every day. Children are also taught about the rule of law in the following ways:
- Ready, Respectful, Safe - a consistent, fair and kind behaviour policy
- Local community visits - police officers, fire fighters
- Religious Education - the Ten Commandments, the Five Pillars of Islam
- History curriculum - crime and punishment, law and order
- Picture News - as part of our SMSC curriculum
Individual Liberty
Our value of Integrity, also allows our children to actively make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. We educate and provide boundaries for our children to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education.
- E-safety - knowing how to keep yourself safe on line
- Extra-curricular activities - making informed choices to participate in a range of activities
- Anti-bullying policy - addressing prejudicial and discriminatory behaviour
- 'Valuing All God's Children' - challenging homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying

Mutual Respect
The children understand that respect is essential in order that we exist in harmony with each other. Through our value of Thoughtfulness, it is expected that respect is shown to everyone, whatever differences we may have and to everything, however big or small.
- Celebration assembly - celebrating successes and achievements
- Courageous advocacy - challenging social injustice
- Ready, Respectful, Safe - behaviour policy rooted in mutual respect

Tolerance of Those With Different Faiths And Beliefs
Our core value of Community ensures tolerance of those who have different faiths and beliefs. Our children gain an enhanced understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and at Christ Church we enhance our understanding of different faiths and beliefs in the following ways:
- Religious Education - provision of an 'excellent' curriculum (SIAMS 2019)
- Visits and visitors - Hinduism workshops, local mosque
- Local community - strong links with the Wirral Deen Centre
- Celebration of other faiths - Diwali, Ramadan, Eid, Chinese New Year
- Accreditations - School of Sanctuary, Global Neighbours
- Picture News - as part of our SMSC curriculum
Picture News
All children at Christ Church are actively encouraged to have a voice. Picture News allows us to provide depth to our rich curriculum as it complements our SMSC education and also links directly to both our Christian and British Values. Every week during class collective worship, the children are faced with a 'Big Question'. The question encourages children to examine what they hear and read, think around key issues and topics, voice their own opinions and develop ‘healthy’ news mindsets.
