Christ Church CE Primary School

Precision teaching is an evidenced based intervention technique, and it is vitally important that it is carried out correctly in order to ensure that it is effective. Therefore, all staff delivering precision teaching at Christ Church have had training delivered by a Wirral local authority educational psychologist with the opportunity for further supervision sessions.

What is Precision Teaching?

Precision teaching is a structured teaching method that is designed to improve the accuracy and fluency of reading, spelling and maths. The main goal of precision teaching is to target and improve specific knowledge within an intervention.

Precision teaching is often used with children with SEND who might need additional support. It is a highly focused, evidence based intervention. These interventions are delivered by all teaching assistants at Christ Church, who have received bespoke training from a Wirral local authority Educational Psychologist.

How does Precision Teaching work?

At Christ Church, precision teaching is carried out on a one-to-one or small group basis,  with each intervention session lasting 10 minutes, and taking place daily.

Precision teaching is designed to get children to think quickly until they are able to recall the specific knowledge instinctively. This is why this form of structured teaching intervention is so fast-paced and repetitive - children will learn to read or spell words, or recall basic mathematical skills until they become fluent and confident. They only move on to a new piece of knowledge once they have mastered the information they are currently working on.

How is Precision Teaching used in the classroom?

Precision teaching is a one-to-one or small group intervention, so at Christ Church, it is delivered  in quiet spaces, away from the main classroom teaching.

Precision teaching sessions are delivered daily to ensure children have opportunities to practise and develop the targeted knowledge, as well as opportunities to transfer and generalise their learning into their everyday learning environment.

What are the advantages of Precision Teaching?

The main advantage of precision teaching is that it is a flexible intervention.  At Christ Church, precision teaching allows us to adjust and tailor our approach to target specific areas that children need the most support with.

Due to the flexibility of precision teaching, it is a great intervention for building the confidence of children because it develops their strengths and helps them to engage more with the process.
