Social, Emotional and Mental Health at Christ Church
What is SEMH? 🧠❤️
Social, Emotional and Mental Health is one of the four main areas of need outlined in the SEND Code of Practice. It focuses on supporting children’s emotional well-being, helping them navigate their feelings and building positive relationships.
Emotional well-being is not fixed; it changes based on what is happening in a child's life. When children face big feelings or overwhelming stress, it can show up in different ways. This can include:
-
Internalising challenges: Becoming quiet, anxious, withdrawn, isolated, or feeling overwhelmed by worries (such as anxiety or depression).
-
Externalising challenges: Displaying distressed, dysregulated, or challenging behaviors, or finding it hard to focus and settle (often linked to profiles like ADHD or Attachment differences).
Our Approach: Healing, Connection and Regulation 🤍
At Christ Church, supporting our pupils’ emotional health is at the very heart of everything we do. Guided by our trauma-responsive approach, we look beyond a child's behaviour to understand the feeling behind it. We know that children can only learn when they feel safe, connected and emotionally regulated.
We do not view behavior as something to be punished, but as a communication of need. Our priority is to provide relational safety - ensuring every child has trusted adults who can help them calm their nervous system, feel understood and heal.
How We Support Your Child in the Classroom 🤝
We provide a nurturing environment through three main steps:
1. A Nurturing and Predictable School (Universal Support)
We build emotional safety into the very fabric of our school day so that all children feel secure. Our everyday practices include:
-
Daily emotional check-ins (such as feelings charts) so children can express how they feel.
-
Staff trained in co-regulation techniques, using calm voices, empathy and active listening to help children manage big emotions.
-
Clear, predictable routines and quiet "safe spaces" in classrooms where children can go to reset when they feel overwhelmed.
2. Bespoke Therapeutic Support (Targeted Interventions)
We are incredibly proud to host a comprehensive and bespoke SEMH therapeutic service right here at Christ Church. If a child needs extra emotional care, we act quickly to provide targeted, internal therapies and small-group support. This includes nurturing groups, drawing and talking, mentoring and emotional literacy support (ELSA) designed to build resilience and self-esteem.
3. Working Together and Specialist Guidance (Expert Support)
We use a proactive 'Assess-Plan-Do-Review' cycle to ensure our emotional support is making a real difference. We work hand-in-hand with families to look at the whole child. When needed, we collaborate with external mental health professionals, including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and specialised counselors, to ensure your child receives the exact care they deserve.
Our Promise: We will never give up on a child. We promise to provide a safe harbor where your child is listened to, protected and given the time, space and professional care they need to thrive emotionally.
