The Nook at Christ Church
At Christ Church, we know that children can only learn when they feel safe, happy and calm. The Nook is our school’s special emotional wellbeing space. It is a quiet, comfortable sanctuary where children go to understand their feelings, talk about their worries and build up their confidence.
It is run by our highly-trained, caring staff who know exactly how to help children feel safe and listened to.
🕒 How The Nook Supports Your Child Every Day
The Nook offers three types of support depending on what your child needs:
-
👤 One-to-One Time: A private, calm space for a child to talk through big feelings and worries with a trusted adult.
-
👥 Small Groups: Fun, friendly sessions where children practice making friends, sharing and working together.
-
🥪 Playtime & Lunch Support: Breaktimes can sometimes feel too loud or overwhelming. The Nook is open during these times as a quiet space to play safely and happily.
🛠️ Our Toolkit of Support (Interventions)
We use proven, creative activities to help children thrive. Here is what we use and how it helps:
❤️ Talking & Processing Feelings
-
ELSA & Emotional Literacy: Gentle support to help children understand their emotions and build self-esteem.
-
Drawing and Talking: A safe way for children to draw out their worries and process their feelings without pressure.
-
Time to Talk & Next Steps: Simple conversation cards that help children learn how to solve everyday problems.
-
Wellbeing Check-ins: Quick, friendly morning chats to make sure your child is feeling ready for the day.
🤝 Friendship & Social Skills
-
Lego Therapy: Building together in teams to naturally practice speaking, listening and sharing.
-
Socially Speaking: Fun games that help children build confidence in making and keeping friends.
🐾 Animals & Nature
-
The Dog Mentor: Spending time with our trained school dog to instantly lower anxiety, bring joy, and build trust.
-
Sensory Garden: A peaceful outdoor nature space where children can sit quietly and connect with the outdoors to calm their minds.
🏃♂️ Body & Movement
-
Sensory Circuits: Fun, structured movement activities (like jumping or balancing) that help children wake up their bodies or calm down their nervous systems before heading back to class.
Our Promise: We don't view The Nook as a place where children are sent away because they are struggling. We view it as a "refueling station." It is a place to get a boost of love, care and support so your child can go back to their classroom feeling strong, valued and ready to succeed.
